You can use Quick Search, to search for an item by
its title, author or subject.
1. Find the box for “Enter a word or phrase and
press a search button.”
2. In the box, type the title, author or subject.
HINTS:
-
Titles: You can omit the first word, if the word
is “the,” “a” or “an.”
-
Capitalization doesn’t matter, but spelling and
punctuation, such as apostrophes, do.
-
If you’re searching by author, you can type the
first name first: margaret atwood or last
name first: atwood, margaret
-
If you’re searching by subject, sometimes you’ll
need to try various synonyms. Also, watch for
“see” and “see also” entries. The “see” entry
means that another term has been used to
classify the books about this topic (for
example, if you type “cooking” you’ll get “For
cooking, see: cookery.”) You can click the
underlined “see” word or phrase to jump to that
classification.
3. At the right of the screen, you’ll see icons for
“Title,” “Author” and “Subject.” Click the
appropriate icon. Clicking the “Search” icon,
searches title, author, and subject and the same
time.
4. If the message “Unable to find any material
matching request” comes up, you can click “OK” to
see a list of similar terms. If you find one that’s
close, click on the term, then click “Select.” That
term will then be inserted into the search box. Now
click the “Search” icon.
5. The results page will show you the title of the
item, the author, the call number and the status. An
icon to the left of each title indicates the format
(book, video, DVD, CD, book-on-tape, or book-on-CD.
To see the full record for an item, click on its
title. If you want to see other items by the same
author, click the author’s name. You can also
click on the subjects listed for the item to find
more items on the same subject. The status of the
item indicates whether the items checked out. “In”
means it isn’t checked out; “out” means it is.
6. The results are arranged in alphabetical order by
the title. You can rearrange them by clicking the
“Sort” icon. For example, to put the results in
alphabetical order by the author, choose “Author
Index” from the “Sort” menu, then click the gray
“Sort” button. To put the results in order of their
publication date (the oldest first), choose “Date of
Publication.” To go to the most recent item, sort
by date and then use “Go to” and choose the highest
number in the “search results” listing.
7. To get details about an item click on its title.
The record that comes up will show you how many
copies of the item we own and whether the book is on
the shelf, checked out (and the due date) or on
reserve and if so, how many people are waiting for
the item). The record will also show you what
subjects the item covers, the publisher, and date of
publication.
